Let's start off the next year now! That's really what you have to do if your New Year's resolution is going to be to lose weight. You have to get your mind ready for the holidays and then you have to literally set your mind to accept your resolution for the New Year.

How many times have you broken your New Year's resolution? I have ruined my diet plenty of times and I've been battling my weight for years. But, I have it under control now and I had to do that by literally changing my mind about a few things.

First of all, eating should not be viewed as a pleasure. When you enjoy food, you tend to overindulge. Of course, food is very pleasurable. But if you are going to shave any pounds off next year, you have to reduce your view of food to mere nourishment.

Eat five or six small meals a day. In fact, it's like splitting the recommended three meals into five or six smaller meals. Now, people ask why that works. If it's the same amount of food, then what is the big difference?

I compare it to doing work. If you have a huge pile of work on your desk at the beginning of the day, you tend to lug around all day overwhelmed by the amount of work you have to do. But if it's allocated to you throughout the day, you can do the same amount of work and stay energized. It never overwhelms you because it's not all dumped on you at once.

If that makes sense, then you can see what your body is doing. You only have to manage a small portion of food at a time. You are lighter and therefore, more energetic. You can move around easier because you're not full and sluggish. Plus, you are getting the nourishment you need to get through the day.

Second, make it a point to want to measure your food. Make it a point to want to learn the best diet that will benefit you. Make it a point to want to follow that diet accurately.

Notice my choice of words. I'm not suggesting to you that you make it a point to do these things. But, that you make it a point to “want” to do these things. That will make all the difference in the world.

It's not that you have to be on a diet. If that were the case, you could stop any time. Make it a point that you want to be on a better diet. You want to eat the foods that nourish your body and melt the fat away. You want to eat like this for the rest of your life and not just now while you are finding your target weight.

By the way, a little known fact is that there is no food that has to be excluded from a good diet. Eaten with the right combinations of other foods, there is nothing that you can't enjoy. Eaten in moderation, there is nothing you have to deny yourself. That's why this should be a life changing decision you make.

Have a pizza and some chocolate cake! Just make sure that the other foods you eat throughout the day work in combination with those foods to melt the fat away. That's why you want to learn about food. That's why you want to calculate and measure your foods. That's why you want to plan your meals ahead of time so that you can actually enjoy the foods you are eating, thus enjoy your healthy diet while you continue to lose weight daily.

Plus, measuring and counting and planning and eating right are actions that drive your resolution home daily. The more you count and measure, the more in focus you become. You are actually reminding yourself that you made a resolution and it helps to keep you on track.

Finally, get your mind ready now. You know that you want to lose the weight. You know what your New Year's resolution is going to be. So, set your mind for it now!

Start learning about the diet you want to have when the New Year rolls around. Start practicing eating right and you'll start to notice the benefits immediately. If you plan one day and follow it to the letter, you'll have a great day and you'll know what you are really getting into after the New Year countdown. Then, it won't be such a shock to your mind and body.

When you work toward changing your mind, you are including it in your decisions. It's like convincing yourself that you are making the right choices. Sometimes, you have to do that! When you literally change your mind, it works with you and it makes it harder to stray from your goal.

Don't overwhelm your mind! Let it work with you and everything you do will be that much easier. When your mind is prepared, the rest of your body will follow. Sitting on the beach six months from now, you'll be smiling from ear to ear thinking, “Man, that Michael Allen was right!”
