Ready for a break from the bright lights and fast paced Las Vegas Strip? When most people think of downtown Las Vegas, they think of Freemont Street. Walking down Freemont Street is an experience that most people truly enjoy. You feel as if you are in “Old Time Las Vegas”. People love to come here to get away from the business of the Las Vegas Strip.

What makes Freemont Street unique from the rest of downtown Las Vegas? That would be its canopy that covers over a four-block section and towers 90 feet above the street. Not only does the canopy set Freemont Street apart from the rest, but its over 2 million lights brighten up Freemont Street to where you cannot even tell if it is day or night. At sundown, you will be captivated by the computer-generated light and sound show that is presented every hour. There are also special shows that have a theme.

There is so much to see and do that you may be walking quite a bit. Walking will likely help you build up an appetite. Check out the Second Street Grill, which offers American and Pacific Rim cuisine.

The Neon Museum, located at the intersection of Freemont and Las Vegas Boulevard, is a place where you can find refurbished old Las Vegas signs, such as: the old Hacienda Horse and Rider located in the center of Las Vegas Boulevard, Aladdin's Lamp, and Andy Anderson. Also, check out the second level balcony of Fitzgerald's for a spectacular light show.

If it is time to wind down for the night, reserve a room at the Golden Nugget. This is the most upscale hotel and casino in downtown Las Vegas. This is the home of the world's largest gold nugget weighing in at 61 pounds 11 ounces. Near the VIP service desk, you will find an exquisite painting by LeRoy Neiman that was commissioned by the former Golden Nugget owner, Steve Wynn in 1988. Interestingly enough, Kenny Rogers and Paul Anka are talking to Wynn in the painting!

Near the west end of Freemont Street is a 40 foot high neon cowboy called Vegas Vic. This neon cowboy has lived in downtown Las Vegas for 50 years. An interesting story about Vegas Vic is that he used to greet visitors on top of the Pioneer Club, but he was silenced in 1966 when Lee Marvin, who was in town filming a movie, complained about the noise.

Venture to the southwest corner of Freemont Street and you will find the Golden Gate, which was originally the Hotel Nevada in 1906. The best thing about the Golden Gate is that you can get shrimp cocktail for just 99 cents.

While Freemont Street is the most popular part of downtown Las Vegas, there are still other things to do and other places to eat and stay in downtown Las Vegas, such as:

– The Main Street Station
– The Pullman Grille
– California Hotel
– The Las Vegas Club
– Binion's Horseshoe
– Forth Street shops and restaurants

There are casinos for less expensive gambling, and you will enjoy a less expensive day and night in downtown Las Vegas. You do not want to leave Las Vegas without having The Freemont Street Experience. This unique experience will surely keep you coming back for more!
