My wife, Judy, and I embarked on a European cruise last December. One evening the highligted entertainment was a hypnotherapist who enchanted the audience with the antics she provoked from the eager volunteers who accepted her invitation to take part in that night's show. It really was a very enjoyable experience for us, but also quite enlightening as I've pondered it since, and I thought I might share some of my observances with you.

Probably the principle thing I was impressed with was that it looked to me that pretty much everybody has some level of susceptibility to being hypnotized, bewitched, charmed by the powers of suggestion, name it whatever you like. Some folks are affected more easily, more quickly, more completely, than others, but it certainly seemed to me that there is some mental maneuverability in all of us!

This was made obvious to me when the hypnotist, after opening introductions and background discussion, requested involvement from the audience. To do this, she coyly talked everyone present through some of the basic elements of hypnosis, talked about some of the what it is and what it is not aspects, all the while perking interest and overcoming fears.

Then she invited all those who may want to learn for themselves how persuadable or resistant to the hypnotizing process they were to follow along with her as she stepped through some of its basic levels. Here's where I realy became more attentive! I did't place all my attention on what the hypnotist was doing and saying, but instead kind of split 50/50 between her and the audience. I was astonished! Of course, I saw others like myself that were intentionally not allowing themselves to follow along as encouraged by the hypnotherapist. There were others who were somewhat back and forth, in and out. And there were those who were willingly engrossed.

What I found most interesting was not that those who willingly participated experienced the highest degrees of impact, and those who actively dissented were apparantly successful in their efforts. No, that's exactly what one should expect. But what I didn't foresee was that of those who didn't really participate nor really resist, many nonetheless underwent some degree of hypnosis that truly astonished themselves and those around them who saw it!

Well, if everybody who attended a performance such as this was successfully put into a spell, there would be no audience to enjoy the entertainment being presented, would there? However, my enthusiasm over what I observed that night certainly has been aroused and I'm actively seeking to learn more about it. I'll share more of my thoughts and opinions on the subject in future writings, but for now I invite you to visit us at http://www.jujamvideoreview.com/coverthypnosis.html to find out more about this fascinating topic!
