It seems rather like turkeys voting for Christmas when electricity companies offer free advice to customers explaining how they can cut their electricity bills, but London Electricity’s head of business marketing Tony Galloni explains:

“Supplying around 6,000 hotels and restaurants in and around London has allowed us to get a good handle on how energy is used in catering and hotel industry. A little bit of thought on managing energy will result in savings that will lead directly to increased profits for the hotels. With global warming such an immediate issue we all need to give attention to how energy is consumed, and ensure that we can do it as efficiently as possible. Hotels consume vast amounts of energy because of the fact they operate over 24 hours, and guests remain largely unconcerned about the amount of energy they use while staying in the their rooms.”

The cost-busting guide, available to any hotel manager in the capital, contains 40 tips on how hotels can cut their utility bills. Many are described as “low cost and common sense” by the authors, such as turning the hotel heating down 1° C to get a 10% reduction in heating bills. Other ideas include: replacing all standard tungsten bulbs in the hotel with low-energy ones that use one-fifth of the energy, and ensuring that water heaters are regulated so that just enough hot water is produced for the hotel’s guests and isn’t warmed simply to just go cold again. Other suggestions include things done as second nature in most households; switching off electrical appliances such as TVs in the lounges when not in use, and killing the power to the photocopier in the business centre or office when not needed. Plus, there are many other ideas contained in the guide that hotels in London would be advised to adopt, if not to increase their profits then at least to cut excessive energy consumption.

London Electricity estimate that an average medium-sized hotel in London – one that contains 100 rooms, swimming pool, restaurant and a bar – would save in the region of £7,500 per year if they adopted all the recommendations incorporated in the guide. That sort of figure should appeal to all hotel owners; from those running family-owned establishments to big-name, multi-national hotels that could increase their corporate profits by millions if they applied all of London Electricity’s recommendations across their entire hotel chain.

It serves great fresh fish and a wide-range of refreshing, cooling drinks. For the real food fan, El Portet Moraira has a two-star Michelin restaurant: Le Dauphin. It is an absolute must for an early evening meal, sat on the terrace above the beach, enjoying a crisp Chardonnay as you take in the view across the stunning bay while, in the distance, the sun sets dramatically behind the mighty Penon d’Ifach rock. El Portet Moraira is located a five minute drive from the centre of Moraira. With great facilities and ample car-parking, it is an excellent choice for a great day out.

Next along the Teulada Moraira coast is Playa D’Ampolla. One of the four Moraira beaches awarded a blue flag award. In keeping with the blue flag standards, the Playa D’Ampolla is kept exceptionally clean and tidy. It is a golden, sandy beach and is the largest and most popular beach in Teulada Moraira. Families love it for its soft and golden sand, sunbathers love it for its wide and deep expanse and water enthusiasts love it for its array of sporting facilities. Amongst its facilities, it has a great beach-bar, loungers and umbrellas, showers and bathroom facilities and is patrolled by Red Cross lifeguards.

Further along the coast is Platgetes, which comprises two small beaches: one is shallow, with golden sand, whilst the other is rocky with an abundance of small, sea-life swimming in its inlets and coves: great for young children to explore. A promenade links the two beaches and provides excellent photo opportunities. The beaches are equipped with a parking area, a restaurant and a Red Cross platform where a life-guard keeps a safe watch across the beaches.

At the most southerly point of the Teulada Moraira coast is the last beach: L’Andrago. It is a pebble-beach, with large boulders dotted here and there: ideal for laying out a towel, lying back and topping up your tan. The coves and inlets at the edges of the beach are an excellent location to practice your scuba-diving and snorkeling. Famous, locally for being a very quiet beach, it is the perfect location for a quiet afternoon of relaxing, stress-free sunbathing. Additionally, parking is available and a number of small restaurants are just a five-minute walk away.

WestJet’s plan was to expand the market by reducing fares so that a new class of travelers could afford to fly. In January 1996, Research Capital Corp. helped put million in stock with other private investors. The largest investor was the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board. On February 29th, 1996 the first commercial flight of the airline using a Boeing 737 took place. The first routes were Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Vancouver, and Winnipeg. At the time, they had three Boeing 737-200s. WestJet did not offer any paper tickets, frequent flier program, in-flight meals, or airport lounges. As well, it had only one class of seating and did not have any of the computer reservation systems that are used by the majority of airlines and travel agents.

In September 1996, Canadian transport officials found WestJet’s maintenance record-keeping program lacking and ordered the carrier to suspend operations. The grounding cost the carrier C0,000 a day and stranded many passengers. The shutdown lasted 17 days. In July, 1999, the airline went public. After 4 years of success in Western Canada, in 2000, WestJet brought low-cost flights to a new area near Toronto. WestJet opened a hub in Hamilton, Ontario. Several eastern markets, including Ottawa, were added within a couple of months. Thunder Bay, Grande Prairie, and Prince George joined the route network later that year.

In the spring of 2000, the company announced plans to compete in the eastern half of Canada which put them in direct competition with Air Canada. WestJet ordered 20 Boeing 737 planes to provide capacity for the expansion. WestJet saw a steady growth and reported its best quarterly profit to that date in late October, 2006. Between 2000 and 2009, WestJet’s local market share rose significantly. Today, WestJet is continuing with its plans to continue its expansion by adding new routes to the United States and also to Europe.
